Rugby Salutes 'Champion Recyclers'

Rugby says it has achieved a recycling revolution, as its residents are helping to turn the Borough into an environmentally friendly haven with its new ‘three bin’ system for rubbish collection.

Just two months after the start of the new three-bin scheme, recycling rates are exceeding all predictions. In the eight-week period from 20 April – when the service started – to 14 June, Rugby residents recycled a whopping 62 per cent of their waste.

When the scheme started, recycling bosses hoped the Borough would achieve a target of more than 50 per cent. The new three-bin system allows people in the Borough to recycle a huge amount more than the previous red box system.

In addition to the black wheelie bin (for residual waste) and the green wheelie bin (for food and garden waste) households have been given a blue-lidded wheelie bin in which they can put all their glass, cardboard, paper, cans, plastics, tetrapaks and other materials. Councillor Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for the Sustainable Environment, said: “I’d like to thank – and congratulate – people in the Borough for achieving this impressive result so soon after the new scheme was launched.

“We knew people across the Borough were hungry for the opportunity to recycle more of their waste and this fantastic figure is testament to people’s desire to look after our environment now and for the future.”
