The Light Bulb Library
1st Ashton Brownies will be presented with special certificates to mark the launch of the Brownie Light Bulb Library on January 25th 2008 at Ashton Hayes Primary School, Church Road, Ashton Hayes in Cheshire. Clare Short MP will make the presentation.
Brown Owl Tracey Todhunter said: “We are very excited that Ms Short has accepted our invitation to visit the village, she is very impressed by the girls’ initiative to reduce the carbon emissions of their families’. The scheme gives residents the opportunity to borrow a range of low energy light bulbs to try in their own homes before making a purchase”.
Inspired by a conversation with Chris Goodall (author of How to Live a Low Carbon Life), Tracey successfully landed a deal with E.ON to buy bulbs at the same discounts offered to high street retailers. 1st Ashton Brownies are the first youth group to participate in the scheme.
Responding to the Challenge
Ashton Hayes Parish Council declared its ambition to be the first carbon neutral village in England in January 2006. Since the launch a number of community groups have taken up the challenge to reduce their carbon footprint. The Primary School has achieved its silver Eco Schools Award and is actively working to improve the school grounds to enable the children to grow vegetables thanks to the help of volunteers from Ash-worth Timebank who are passing their gardening skills on to a new generation at the weekly Eco Club.
