Southwold Beach Clean with Adnams

Emma Hibbertt tells us how you can join in the annual beach cleans around Southwold.

“You will know that here at Adnams we are lucky enough to be right on the coast, it’s central to our ‘Beer from the Coast’ advertising campaign and we know that the coast is fragile and requires respect and maintenance. So, we’ve teamed up with the Marine Conservation Society and Suffolk Coast and Heaths and have ‘adopted’ a section of Southwold’s beach.

“It’s a 1km stretch from Gun Hill to the Harbour – officially known as The Denes. Our commitment is to clean it four times a year, one of those dates always fits in with the MCS’s annual BeachWatch survey in September, the other dates we can choose. We usually go for summer months – we tried February and didn’t like it!

“We’ve just had our first clean of the year – we work with a local High School in Lowestoft with their Entrepreneurial Spirit students and we helped them to organise a beachclean for Southwold Primary School children. A lovely day, if a little hectic at times!

So, our next dates are as follows:
Saturday 21 July
Saturday 15 September

“The usual pattern is that we meet in the Adnams Swan hotel in Southwold for issue of equipment (bags, hoops, gloves and pickers etc) at 10.30am and then down to the beach for 11am. When we’re done, we usually end up at the Harbour Inn for well-deserved fish & chips and a pint of Adnams* . We will make a small charge for this to help us with our costs, but I promise it will be very reasonable and depending on numbers (we seem to be growing all the time) we may need to stagger the lunch so our man Colin at the Harbour isn’t overwhelmed with hungry beachcleaners!

“If you are interested in registering for any on the Adnams Coastal Cleans, please email me and let me know which dates you are interested in and I’ll add your name to my list. Specific details will then follow prior to each event. Obviously the next one is only in a couple of weeks, so I will need to get cracking on that one fairly soon.

“If you wish to make a weekend of it, I am happy to suggest a range of accommodation, from campsites, B&Bs and hotels, I can even offer a *10% discount*at the Adnams Crown Hotel (rooms subject to availability)
